Map Layouts: I have a very huge background as a map designer. I served the Army for 4 years as a draftsperson (2 years active and 2 years reserve). I went to a technical institute for drafting and CADD which landed me a job with an engineering firm for 19 years as a CADD technician. Much of my time with this engineering firm was designing colorful maps, landscapes and buildings for businesses, parks and more.
This week I was hired to design a cartoon map for an upcoming Temple University International street fair. What FUN! Designing cartoons is a little different from working with an engineering firm, although the same skills do apply. Most engineering maps have to be accurate and calculated to the proper scale, as you are looking down, from above, at the property.
For a cartoon map, this does not apply and a this map is much more creative and FUN! As you can see in my illustration, I created a fun cartoon image of the buildings, tents and property layout for this upcoming fair, in a 3D pop out type of art. No scale is required. The cartoons of the buildings, tents and labeled roads tells a person how to navigate. These maps will be available at the event.
There will be so many activities at this fair and you will also see a great and professional strolling magician ~wink. (Sorry, no caricature artists on this day) Don’t miss out on the fun at Temple University in Philadelphia on April 16th.
