Commercial Digital Cartoon!

Posted on February 22, 2009

To my surprise, I downloaded my email this weekend and I received an order and payment for a commercial cartoon.

This client said, “Thank you for letting me know you received the info and payment. I look forward to seeing the finished product. All of your other artwork looks fantastic and I know his will as well.”
Here is the photo that I created a cartoon image into my finished design, below.

Step by Step Studio Digital Cartoon.

My client gave me close up head shots, along with information about the digital caricature I was about to create for her.
Scene: Criminal lawyer, also runner, with shirt and silver pen saying “The Great…”
Sometimes, I draw straight from my Cintiq with photo open next to drawing, but at times, I will sketch on paper, then scan and trace, which is what I did here.

First step, a rough pencil of head, then body.
step-1a

Scan and trace in Photoshop. I zoom up on my linework to make sure they are clean and not rough sketchy lines. Later, I will work on thicker lines for shadows.
step-2a

I duplicate the layer with my black line work and set layer to multiply and then color.
I then merge layers after I color.
step-3a
step-4a
step-5a

I started to add the background scene of the city and courthouse with sketching in Photoshop, fixing line work at close range, then color.
step-6a
step-7a

I added color shadows and other small touch ups with the details given to me about the scene (burglar, paper and writing).
I try my best to balance the drawing and keep a good composition.
step-9a

Finished! Wah-lah!
step-10a

This is one of many ways I do my studio digital. Other times, I use Painter and patch up with Photoshop. This one I did all design in Photoshop CS3.

More Digital Cartoons!

Posted on February 22, 2009

I had the pleasure of working with my art friend John and as I worked with him, I drew a fun digital cartoon for him.

Yes, it’s a bit extreme, but it made him laugh and other’s loved watching me create it. He happened to be moving around and talking quite a bit, so this is what happens to you when you rooch around. lol!

My conscience got the best of me, so I drew another cartoon of John on how he actually looks! :)

And I drew Scott 2 times for warm up. The first one he said he looked like a praying mantis with his puffy eyes. ha ha The second one he liked, of course.

Advertising my Live Digital Caricatures at PartyPop

Since Scott has proven to be an accomplished graphic designer on our past designs and some other artists’ websites and advertising, I had him design my Party Pop panel, update my video (also designed by Scott) and rewrite my bio on their site.

We created this new panel to match the video he produced to create a congruent style with my advertising and promotional material.

Scott also wrote an in-depth article on this very concept. He goes into great detail about making sure you are consistent with your promo materials and websites (like having blog.yourname.com instead of yourname.blogspot.com).

You can read his article at the Digital Blacksmiths site, where I am also a contributor. Read it here.

Let me know what you think of the new design and the article!
