Cartoons on Ceramics!

Posted on December 28, 2008

A few months ago when I was drawing at Petco events, I would arrive early and shop around. I went into Michaels (arts and craft store) and happen to buy a few fun and inexpensive ceramic projects with ceramic paint.

I recently gave this ceramic project a go this week for a gift for my husband. Yes, I know it’s a few days late, but this turned out to be a fun project for both of us!

Since Scott loves his coffee, I bought this HUGE mug and decided to paint his cartoon on it, along with his name.
I did TRY the same on a HUGE piggy bank for Scott’s nephew yesterday, but I forgot to take photos of it.

Here is my progress of THIS ceramic project:

Step-1 THE MUG (about $10 at Michael’s)

Step-2 THE PAINT on paper plate, water and napkin (paint set was about $15 at Michaels)
Ceramic Mug Step 2

Step-3 CARTOON sketching – I sketched with a #2 pencil, outlined it with black ceramic paint marker, then filled in with other paint from set)
Ceramic Mug Step 3

Step-4 FILLING up the colors inside the lines with ceramic paint
Ceramic Mug Step 4

Scott’s NAME, too, This was with a gold tube ceramic paint that you squeeze to make the thick raised line, cool, eh?

Step-5 ALLOW to DRY 24 hours and bake 35 minutes in oven at 400 degrees, let cool (photo to come)

Casino Cartoon!

I designed this for a client, who will be surprising his wife with a new house and this cartoon as the poster in her new basement.

I thought client had wanted it for Christmas, with only having a few days , but fortunately there was no rush for this design.

I love being able to put my full attention and time into my art. I’m a firm believer in the saying “Haste makes waste.”

Digital Advertising!

Posted on December 26, 2008

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas!

In the spirit of giving, I thought I’d share something that I’ve been using for quite awhile that other caricature artists could use for advertising and promoting what we do: a digital picture frame.

I first started using one last year when I wanted to add something extra to the ’show’ when I perform my Live Digital entertainment, but then realized this would make an excellent addition to my regular easel caricature gigs.

These digital frames take USB sticks, as well as memory cards from pretty much any digital camera and can play back both video files as movies and also pictures in a slide show.

Years ago, I often had a sign that I used to tell how long I would be working and other things. So I interjected this info into the slide show, along with a few humorous things drawn in my cartoon style.

It also acted as advertisement for my Live Digital Caricature entertainment or, if I am there through an agent, their contact info. It’s so easy to change this content on the digital picture frame (just drag some files onto a USB drive and I’m done!).

This one is my second frame (my first was a $300 frame that was something like 12 inches across). My current one is smaller, but looks very sleek on the stand I have for it, and also keeps people in the line entertained.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Caricatures for Christmas Party

Posted on December 23, 2008

Almost Christmas (I think we’re under the 48 hour countdown!) and I squeezed in one final event before helping my husband do his Christmas shopping!

This was a fun gig for me because I decided to really focus on the bodies of those in the hot seat. And I didn’t just want to draw ‘a body’ but rather apply what I have learned over the past year about posing and character design from Steve Silver.

This is going to be an adventure as I post more and more of these character designs and unique ‘personality poses’ from my events. Hope you like this batch!
